The City of El Paso is seeking an experienced leader to fill the position of Chief of Police.  The El Paso Police Department has a strong commitment of providing community-oriented law enforcement services by focusing on partnerships with the community.

The City of El Paso is a non-home rule municipality, with a population of 2,800 located 14 miles north of Bloomington-Normal just off Interstate 39 and is in the southeastern part of Woodford County in Central Illinois.  The Chief of Police reports to the Director of Public Service, Mayor and City Council.  The Chief of Police supervises 5 full-time unionized patrolmen (1 - School Resource Officer), 5 part-time patrolman and 1 crossing guard. 

The Chief of Police is the chief executive officer of the department and the final departmental authority on all matters of policy, operations and discipline.  The Chief is responsible for planning, budgeting, staffing, direction, coordinating and controlling of all department functions and activities of the police department.

Candidates must have strong management and leadership skills with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience with a law enforcement agency as a sworn officer, with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.  Must be an exceptional communicator, able to thoughtfully represent the interests of the Department and the City, with a high level of community engagement.  Required qualifications include State Certified Peace Officer certified by the Illinois Local Government Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, have an Associate degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.  A Bachelor’s Degree would be preferred.  Possess a valid driver’s license with a safe record and a valid Firearms Owner’s Identification (FOID) card.

The starting salary range is $65,000 - $99,985 in accordance with candidate’s qualifications and experience.  Benefits include Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), paid Holidays, Medical/Dental Insurance, take home squad car.  Residency is required within one (1) year of hire within the corporate limits of El Paso.
