POLICE CHIEF
City of Pella, Iowa 

The City of Pella is seeking an experienced and active leader to serve as Police Chief.  Located in central Iowa, Pella is a vibrant family-oriented community with a population of 10,352. Pella is ranked the second safest city in Iowa by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, proving a strong commitment to public service.  Located 50 miles southeast of Des Moines, Pella is known for its strong Dutch heritage as well as being one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Midwest. The largest industries served in Pella include manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, and service.  Large employers include Pella Corporation, Vermeer Corporation, Precision Pulley & Idler (PPI), Pella Regional Health Center, and Central College. 

The position of Police Chief is a sworn department head level position reporting directly to the City Administrator. The Pella Police Department consists of four lieutenants, 13 officers, seven civilian staff members, and six police reserves. This position will continue the traditions of excellence and lead the department and city towards innovation with high standards for the future. 

Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field and five years’ police operations experience including senior level responsibilities and supervision, broad experience in a municipal law enforcement agency, proven track record of accomplishment, ability to initiate and maintain progressive community policing programs and law enforcement methods and management experience.  In addition, candidates should have Iowa Law Enforcement Certification within one year www.ileatraining.org, CPR certification, obtain a valid Iowa Driver’s License within six months, and Incident Command system courses (IS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800). 

Candidates must pass the physical examination requirements established by the Municipal Fire and Police Retirement System of Iowa. 

The starting salary for the position ranges from $105,000 to $125,000 depending upon knowledge, skills, and experience.
