Illinois Association Chiefs of Police - Springfield, Illinois  
Position: Communications and Member Relations              

Description:  New position to be filled in 2018; Reports to the Executive Director
Primary Functions: This is a full-time Springfield-based position. The primary functions of this position are to oversee and lead the association’s communications efforts on all platforms (e.g., website, electronic newsletter, legislative updates, social media), coordinate member relations and communications, and provide customer service. This person will have opportunities for management development, professional development, and promotions within the association.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
75%   Communications

  • Serve as primary writer, editor, and publisher of website content, including articles and submitted photographs.
  • Write and disseminate Weekly Bulletin, an electronic newsletter.
  • Work closely with the Legislative Committee to:
    • Maintain association positions on legislation on ILACP website;
    • Write periodic Legislative Updates for members;
    • Communicate ILACP positions to public officials, as directed.
  • Coordinate promotion of awards, receive awards nominations, and share documents with Awards Committee.
  • Work with Education Committee chair and Executive Director on materials related to training sessions and Annual Conference and Annual Awards Banquet.
  • Take minutes at quarterly meetings of Executive Board and the annual General Membership Meeting.
  • Promote training events and coordinate documentation required by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
  • Work closely with Public Relations Committee on social media content.
  • Collaborate on writing and publishing press releases and other association statements and documents.
  • Maintain Editorial Calendar
  • Maintain updated Bylaws, as well as Resolutions, on website.
  • Handle online advertising.
  • Occasional travel in the state of Illinois.

25%  Member Relations and Other Duties as Assigned

  • Handle initial communications with new members.
  • Prepare and forward credentials for new members.
  • Process Life Member requests.
  • Serve as a primary liaison to committee chairs and assist committees in posting content to ILACP website and in using the association’s membership software for committee communications.
  • Office duties:
    • Answer phones and respond appropriately;
    • Greet visitors as needed and respond appropriately;
    • Other general office duties as assigned.
  • Attend the association’s Annual Conference (usually in April) and Midwest Expo (usually August).
  • Assist at other events as assigned (e.g., Lobby Day and Legislative Reception).

Desirable duties on the horizon

  • Assist Executive Director in recruitment of Sponsors and Partners.
  • Help the association move into the video era.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or 10 years of experience in major tasks listed in “Primary Duties and Responsibilities.”
  • Positive perspective of law enforcement and its role in society.
  • Two to four years of experience in writing for publications, websites, or organizational communications outlets, or similar experience.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with legislation and public policy, and ability to write brief bill analyses and articulate association’s positions on bills. (Collaborates with Legislative Committee, lobbyist, Board of Officers, and Executive Director on this.)
  • Familiarity with social media and ability to adapt to new media and technologies related to communications.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Typing and general familiarity with computers.
  • General familiarity with software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and web browsers.
  • Valid driver’s license and availability for occasional travel in the state of Illinois.

Preferred Knowledge and Experience:

  • The role of law enforcement in 21st century America.
  • Experience in working with, recruiting, and raising money from Sponsors, Partners, or Advertisers.
  • Working knowledge of photography for posting on social media.

Salary: $50,000-$55,000; negotiable.
